The past four days, I've been working constantly on updating the City of Temecula Fire Information page and updating the City's Government channel (ch3 on Time Warner and Verizon FiOS). Temecula isn't in any threat of fires, but as a big brother to other communities in the area, everyone looks to us for information. Normally we get 2,000 visits a day to our site, last few days we've gotten over 80,000 visits. Until last night, the City of Murrieta never posted anything about the fires on their website other than one press release, they don't have a webmaster that updates their content up to the minute, they contract out to outside help, which scares me when they have a real emergency how will they get their information out.
Anyways, its my belief as well as others, that just like YouTube rocketed into the internet spotlight with the posting of SNL's Lazy Sunday, the new updates to Google Maps will do the same. The new version of Google Maps allows users to create maps, use different icons, and save them for others to use.
Below is a map that I made and posted for Temecula Evacuation Centers.

Other maps that are gaining huge internet viewership is the map of San Diego wildfire updates (KPBS) and a map of Los Angeles wildfire updates (LA Times).
