Movie Top 10 system is Flawed!

Friday, April 27, 2007 3:52 PM

I noticed something this weekend that was odd. When I went to see Hot Fuzz on Friday night the theater was packed. I thought this movie, a british comedy, could just maybe be a Number 1 debut. Then I checked Yahoo! Movies on Monday and saw that it actually got number 6. Then I noticed that the movie only played at 825 theaters. I made a spreadsheet to see the weekend gross per theater and noticed that it almost doubled the weekend gross per theater than the number 1 movie got. To me, Weekend Gross per Theater is a much better gauge than total gross.

The question of why we even care about how much a movie boggles my mind. I would want to know if I was an investor, or a theater owner, but as joe moviegoer? My guess is that the top 10 movie grossers is a gauge on how many people go see the movie. "ooh this movie made more than that movie, its clearly better" FLAWED! A more accurate gauge of how many people went to see the movie is......ready for my nobel peace prize winning solution???? NUMBER OF TICKETS SOLD! Wow what a novel idea. That would better gauge the success of a current movie vs an older movie, wow Spider Man made this much more than when ET only made that much, thats like saying that because 1000 people at $10 was more than 2000 people at $3. Ticket prices go up so their gauge is flawed.

As a movie producer, I would gauge my success on my ROI, return on investment. The distribution company got more ROI than any other movie, they spent less on film and got more for it. I'm also willing to bet that week 2 of Hot Fuzz will be shown in more theaters and possibly get higher than number 6. Just because some big distributer shells out tons of cash and gets it into 3000 theaters and gets number 1 doesn't mean more people saw that movie per theater, it just means that everyone who would have seen Hot Fuzz saw Disturbia because Hot Fuzz wasnt at their theater.

FINALLY, Mainstream Media Admits Thompson Is Wrong

7:39 AM

MSNBC's new article: 'People like Thompson are essentially feeding off the fears of those who don't understand games. Everyone wants a simple solution for a massively complex problem. For those who didn't grow up playing video games, the appeal of a game like "Counter-Strike" can be hard to comprehend. The game promotes communication and team work.

This Blog Post Has Not Been Rated.

Sunday, April 22, 2007 1:57 PM

Today I finally was able to rent the documentary called "This Film is Not Yet Rated." The movie is an expose of the MPAA, Motion Picture Association of America. They are in charge of giving films the ratings of G, PG13, R, or NC-17(which replaced X).

The MPAA is a bunch of secret people, supposedly parents of young kids. The movie exposes who these people are, most have kids older than 25. This film shows why movies were given NC-17 ratings and why movies with the exact same shot get R ratings. After watching this film, you will most likely be disgusted with the MPAA and the ratings system.

The movie is not available on blockbuster.com because the filmmaker submitted it to the MPAA and they gave the movie a NC-17 rating, hahahahahaha. I did find one copy at the blockbuster by my house. Its also available on Netflix.com which is one of the movies distributes.

Check out the trailer for this film:

and a quick look at what gets what rating:

Help Make Dr Phil Eat His Words

Thursday, April 19, 2007 12:05 PM

Dr. Phil recently blamed "Video Games" for the fatal rampage of Cho Seung Hui at Virginia Tech. Recent searches reveal that the gunman didn't even own any video games. Write the "know it all" Dr Phil and ask him to recant with the same pomp and exposure with which he falsely blamed Video Games. Ask him to try sticking to facts instead of ranting.

Ethanol: green alternative or deadly killer?

Wednesday, April 18, 2007 3:00 PM

Ethanol, a fuel made by crops like corn(which coincidently the USA is a major exporter of) may not be as green as everyone once thought. A study just released argues that ozone levels would rise dramatically, creating dirtier air, and causing slightly more smog-related deaths.
It’s not green in terms of air pollution,” said study author Mark Jacobson, a Stanford University civil and environmental engineering professor. “If you want to use ethanol, fine, but don’t do it based on health grounds. It’s no better than gasoline, apparently slightly worse.
Read the article on MSNBC for yourself.

This article is more interesting.
Ethanol, touted as an alternative fuel of the future, may eat up far more energy during its creation than it winds up giving back, according to research by a UC Berkeley scientist that raises questions about the nation's move toward its widespread use....But in a recent issue of the journal Critical Reviews in Plant Sciences, UC Berkeley geoengineering professor Tad Patzek argued that up to six times more energy is used to make ethanol than the finished fuel actually contains.....Taking grain apart, fermenting it, distilling it and extruding it uses a lot of fossil energy," he said. "We are grasping at the solution that is by far the least efficient."
Its my opinion that if you want to reduce emissions, you cant use a fuel, drive a hybrid or total electric car. Alternative fuels are just that, fuels. Fuels have emissions and will create pollution. But I'll let my grandkids worry about that :)

Dr. Phil is a douche

Tuesday, April 17, 2007 12:38 PM

Last night Dr. Phil went on Larry King and with his infinite wisdom blamed the Virginia Tech shootings on video games. Click here to read the transcript.
"[C]ommon sense tells you that if these kids are playing video games, where they’re on a mass killing spree in a video game, it’s glamorized on the big screen, it’s become part of the fiber of our society. You take that and mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath or someone suffering from mental illness and add in a dose of rage, the suggestibility is too high."

Why do people blame video games? As my coworker put it, "Video games are just our generations' Rock-n-roll, or Elvis." Its too easy to blame video games. How about the fact that the video game industry is a $+10 billion dollar industry. Practically everyone I know owns one or more video game systems. Why are there not massacres happening everyday?

Over my life I have had a Commodore 64, an Intellivison, an Atari, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega GameGear, Playstation, Nintendo 64, Gameboy, Xbox, Nintendo DS, and a Xbox 360. OMG that means I am going to go kill someone!!!!! Because video game violence = real life violence. Lately I have been playing Saints Row on the Xbox 360. Its a fun game, you run around and shoot people, steal cars, recruit whores, and kill pimps. OMG now I want to go out and shoot a pimp with a shotgun. The game is rated M, for Mature. Im twenty-s*cough*, which is allowed to play the game. If parents want to complain that video games are violent, they can choose not to buy them for their sweet little children.

Want to read something positive about video games? Read this article on MSNBC. Its about how doctors who play games perform better:
"All those years on the couch playing Nintendo and PlayStation appear to be paying off for surgeons. Researchers found that doctors who spent at least three hours a week playing video games made about 37 percent fewer mistakes in laparoscopic surgery and performed the task 27 percent faster than their counterparts who did not play video games."

Check out this newer article about surgeons and video games
:
"The research has revealed that surgeons who warmed up by playing video games for 20 minutes immediately prior to performing surgical drills were faster and made fewer errors than those who did not.Dr. James Rosser, lead investigator on the study involved 303 surgeons participating in a medical training course that included video games."

Video games are just the scapegoats for dumbass tv-personalities who just want to hear themselves speak.

Video games dont kill people, korean nationalists do.

$5 car wash?!? That can't be!!!

11:46 AM

Either its just a slow news day, or I've ran across something so amazing I had to tell everyone.

As I have mentioned before, there are a couple of do-it-yourself car washes about a block from where I live. I might be going out on a limb, but I predict that the future of car washing as we know it are the do-it-yourself car washes!!!!!eleventy1!

Do you own a high pressure hose? tire and engine degreaser? buckets full of car wash soap? a washing brush? colored triple foam protectant? How about a water supply that is filtered so that it won't spot? What if I told you that you can use all those, for just $5 bucks? Well you can! Crazy I know!!!!!

I went with my roomate to check out the Ramona Tire car wash facility after seeing their banner on the street: "Up to 20 minutes: $5." Its a pretty sweet setup. My roomate washed his entire car, quite well, taking his time, and only used 14 minutes. Then he used the spot-free rinse for 6 minutes, and didnt have to dry and his car looks marvelous.

All kidding aside, it is a great deal, for the money you cant get a better deal. I for one am excited because I cant take my Audi through any car wash, the tire tracks scratch the crap out of my rims, so I was limited to washing my car at home, and well, thats not happening. Below are some pics for you.
